Geometry Project Based Learning Math City
Integrate geometry skills and more with this student-tested AND approved Medieval Village Project. Students create 2-d and 3-figures, calculate area, scale, volume and surface area, work with compound structures and figures, problem solve and more! Students design, shape, and eventually build entire medieval villages. Students describe this project as "EPICALLY AWESOME!"
Included in this resource (PDF and slides included):
- Teacher Directions
- Pictures and tips for each stage of the project
- Student handouts for all parts of project.
- EDITABLE RUBRIC
Math concepts:
- Using translations, reflections or rotations of images (8.G.A.1.)
- Congruent figures (8.G.A.2.)
- Volumes and surface area of cones and cylinders (8.G.C.)
- Scale drawings (7.G.A.1.)
- Area of triangles, quadrilaterals, and regular and irregular polygons
- Volume and surface area of cubes, pyramids, triangular prisms, irregular figures and right prisms (7.G.B.6.)

What teachers say about this resource:
Amazing resource. The students were very engaged with this project. Many struggled with how to draw the net figures of the 3D buildings they wanted to build. Once they got the hang of it, the project was smooth sailing. Thank you!
This was one of the best projects I have used with my son. He loved the creativity and the math component was amazing. We had lots of fun learning about all these concepts. This tied in beautifully with our medieval ages unit. Thanks so much
This was a great activity that combined several skills. My Geometry class loved it!
Fun activity that engages students in a real world type lesson.
This is so well thought out. An excellent purchase! Beware that it's quite a commitment of class time. Next year I'll use it as a semester-long independent group project.
I started this project with my students and they had fun. I tied it in with reading "Sir Circumference and the Dragon of Pi" which has a medieval theme as well.
